What smoking does to your body

As every life-loving girl, I love Sex and The City, and I adore Carrie. Although her sense of style didn’t quite fascinate me every time, her kick-ass character was what charmed me. At first I didn’t quite understand Aidan when he broke up with Carrie for her nasty habit. So what? It doesn’t make him any less fascinating, does it? Well, couple of days later as I hugged my aunt, who has been a heavy smoker for at least twenty-five years I finally understood Aidan and his approach. You may find someone interesting, but smoking can be a hell of a turn-off.

I used to believe that when you don’t buy a pack you’re not a smoker, you’re a social smoker and there isn’t anything wrong with being social, is there? It was lately, when I realized that even smoking couple of cigarettes at a party was a crucial beginning of all of my problems. In addition to this icky smell in my hair it could take over my life without me even noticing. Thus, I decided that it’s time to give it up completely and dedicate myself to something beneficial instead, for instance yoga or meditation.

Now, in case you didn’t know all this before, let me tell you more about what smoking does to your body and slap some sense into you to give it up or never-ever take it up in the first place.

My aunt, she had gray hair that we’re so thin that you could see her pink skin glowing through. As the toxins in cigarettes damage your DNA your hair won’t be as strong and shiny as they used to be. In fact, men who smoke are twice as likely to go bald as men who are non-smokers.

Smokers tend to have a wrinkly face and as smoking harms your blood supply that keeps your skin tissue looking healthy they usually look 1.4 years older. Well, in case you have nothing better to do with your money than invest it into anti-aging creams and procedures or you just enjoy aging go ahead, smoke it out!

Apparently smokers suffer from different gum diseases and oral cancer. More than 30,000 to 40,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year making it sixth most common cancer. Smoking also evokes tooth loss, and nicotine – well it quite obviously stains your teeth. So that beautiful Colgate smile – you can say goodbye to it.

In addition to oral cancer, smoking also causes lung and skin cancer. Well, to be honest, it causes all kinds of cancers you can think of. People who smoke are three times more likely to have a cancer compared to people who don’t smoke.

As it is with your teeth, nicotine also colours your fingers and nails. And let me tell you: this ugly yellow colour is definitely not in for this season! I suggest you to go for darker colours this winter.

We’ve all had sleepless nights that result in swollen eyes with bags under them. Well, if you’re a smoker, good news! You can now get the same “baggy” look without having a sleepless night! It is thought that nightly nicotine withdrawal is what makes smokers look exhausted and all that stress is actually what causes those mystical bags.

As smoking narrows your blood vessels it makes it hard for your body to heal your wounds and scars, causing your scars to look bigger and redder. In addition your skin will lose its elasticity and strength as toxins from cigarettes damage fibres and connecting tissues. This means that the stretch marks you may or may not have will look even worse and it is impossible to get rid of them.

Now having spoken about how smoking harms your appearance let’s move on to your health risks:

Apparently smokers suffer from different gum diseases and oral cancer. More than 30,000 to 40,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year making it sixth most common cancer. Smoking also evokes tooth loss and nicotine, well it quite obviously stains your teeth.

Fun fact, everybody: Smoking increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Yes, some people say that smoking makes you thinner and I know people who have taken up smoking just to lose some extra pounds. While it suppresses your appetite and fastens your metabolism you also won’t enjoy food as much. Simply because your taste buds won’t work effectively enough so you might as well skip that bag of chips, you won’t feel the taste anyway!

On the other hand, you shouldn’t think it will help you reach that swimsuit body. Smokers are often obese and they do have more visceral fat which surrounds your internal organs. Out of 16-24-year-olds, smoking girls are the most overweight.

To be honest with you, I haven’t seen many athletes who smoke. These two things are like ketchup and ice-cream – they just don’t go together. Firstly, smoking harms your lungs, you are more likely to develop Emphysema and Chronic Bronhitis that allows you to do less physical activities, if any at all. Secondly, they’re usually health-conscious enough to know how much it really harms your body!

And last but not the least, stress and I can’t stress it enough – it’s a myth! Contrary to beliefs that smoking relieves stress, smokers have higher level of stress than non-smokers. The feeling of relief when smoking, occurs because they return to normal unstressed state.
